This is a love letter to Battlefield 3. Agent Espo built a clone of the M16A3 -- the starting weapon for the US Marines in BF3's multiplayer and arguably the best gun in the game. Fast reload, high rate of fire, and full auto made it a monster on maps like Noshahr Canals and Operation Metro. The real build runs a TNTE flat top upper with an Aero Precision detachable carry handle, P&S M5 RAS quad rail with matching rail covers and vertical foregrip, and an A2 birdcage flash hider (Espo went A2 over the game-accurate A1 because he prefers it -- his build, his call). Lower is an 80% receiver marked M16A3, fitted with a Hogue grip and an A1 stock wrapped in medical wrap and painted to match the in-game camo. The optic is a Trijicon RX06 with the 6.5 MOA amber triangle -- a discontinued model powered by tritium and fiber optic that Trijicon may not even service anymore. The light is a PentagonLight UX2, sourced after Espo tracked down the goofy looking lights from the game through a Reddit clone post. Pentagon went under after Surefire sued them over tailcap designs, so good luck finding one. Mags are Colt USGI with Magpul Mag Assists.
The M16A3 vs A4 debate gets addressed too -- the Navy used A3s in both fixed carry handle and flat top configs. Official designation called for a fixed carry handle but flat tops did exist in the field. Putting one in the hands of Marines in 2014 like BF3 does is a stretch, but that's video games for you.
