Quick Answer: What Suppressor Do Builders Choose?

The suppressor market is surprisingly concentrated. The top 5 products account for over 46% of all selections. Otter Creek Polonium K leads at 13.3%, with Sig SLX SURG close behind at 10.7%.

  • Most Popular: Otter Creek Polonium K 556 at 13.3%
  • Best Multi-Cal: Dead Air Sandman X 7.62 at 9.7%
  • Best Military: SureFire SOCOM556-RC3 at 7.1%
  • Best Value: Sig SLX SURG 5.56 at 10.7%

If this is your first suppressor, a .30 caliber can like the Dead Air Sandman X gives you the most flexibility. It handles 5.56, .300 BLK, and .308 from one tube. You sacrifice some sound reduction on 5.56 compared to a dedicated 5.56 can, but you get one suppressor that works on everything.

How This Data Was Sourced

The suppressor data in this guide comes from real GunPartPicker builds, not surveys, not affiliate click data, not manufacturer claims.

We analyzed over 15,000+ new anonymous AR builds created on GunPartPicker. Of those, 661 builds included a suppressor selection across 720+ unique products from 40+ brands.

Suppressor selections are lower than other categories because not every build is suppressor-ready, and the NFA process means builders plan their suppressor purchase more carefully.

GunPartPicker does not track, identify, or store any personal information about builders. All build data is aggregated and anonymized. Your build is your business.

Mount Type: Quick-Attach Dominates

How builders attach their suppressors

Suppressor Mount Type Distribution
ItemShare (%)
Quick-Attach (Muzzle Device)62%
Direct Thread28%
Taper Mount7%
Other3%

Quick-attach at 62%, direct thread at 28%. Quick-attach suppressors mount to a compatible muzzle device (SureFire Warcomp, Dead Air Keymount, etc.) and can be installed or removed in seconds. This convenience is worth the small weight and length penalty for most builders.

Direct thread is simpler, lighter, and often cheaper. But swapping a direct thread can between rifles means carrying a wrench and re-timing each install.

The Suppressor Brands

SureFire (18.2%)

SureFire leads on brand share with the SOCOM556-RC3 at 7.1% and RC4 at 5.4%. The SOCOM series is the military standard. Expensive at $1,100+, but battle-proven.

Otter Creek Labs (15.1%)

The Polonium K 556 at 13.3% is the breakout product. Otter Creek is relatively new but has earned a reputation for lightweight, well-engineered cans. The K model is a short configuration that minimizes added length.

Sig Sauer (14.8%)

Sig's SLX SURG 5.56 at 10.7% is their volume leader. Sig has been expanding aggressively in the suppressor market, and their pricing is competitive with more established brands.

Dead Air (12.6%)

Dead Air Sandman X at 9.7% is the multi-caliber workhorse. Their Keymount system has a huge ecosystem of compatible muzzle devices. Dead Air also makes the Nomad series for more specialized applications.

How to Choose Your Suppressor

  1. Value (Under $700): YHM Turbo K2 or Sig STS Direct Thread. Entry-level suppressors that still deliver meaningful sound reduction.
  2. Mid-Range ($700-$1,000): Otter Creek Polonium K, Dead Air Sandman X, or Sig SLX SURG. This is where most builders land. Good performance, good mount ecosystems.
  3. Premium ($1,000+): SureFire SOCOM series or CGS Hyperion. Duty-grade cans for builders who want the absolute best.

Remember the $200 NFA tax stamp on top of the suppressor price. A $750 suppressor really costs $950 after the stamp. Factor this into your budget. Also, consider your muzzle device. If your barrel already has a SureFire Warcomp, stick with the SureFire SOCOM ecosystem. Switching mount systems means buying a new muzzle device too.

Value Tier: Under $700

Getting into the suppressor game does not require spending $1,000+. YHM and Sig offer legitimate cans at lower price points.

Mid Tier: $700-$1,000

The sweet spot. Otter Creek, Dead Air, and Sig dominate this range with cans that balance performance, weight, and mount ecosystem.

Premium Tier: $1,000+

SureFire SOCOM is the military standard. If you want the can that SOF uses, this is it.

The Otter Creek Polonium K at 13.3% is a newcomer that has already overtaken established brands. This is driven by its short length, light weight, and competitive pricing. Newer suppressor companies are forcing the established brands to innovate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Otter Creek Polonium K 556 leads at 13.3% of all suppressor selections. It is a short, lightweight 5.56 can that balances sound reduction with minimal added length and weight.
Quick-attach leads at 62% of selections. Quick-attach (QD) suppressors mount to a compatible muzzle device and can be installed or removed in seconds. Direct thread at 28% is simpler and lighter, but slower to swap between rifles.
Not necessarily. A .30 caliber suppressor (like the Dead Air Sandman X at 9.7%) can suppress 5.56, .300 BLK, and .308. It will not be as quiet on 5.56 as a dedicated 5.56 can, but it gives you one suppressor for multiple hosts.
eForm 4 processing through a dealer typically takes 4-6 months as of 2026. Paper Form 4 can take 9-12 months. Either way, you pay a $200 tax stamp on top of the suppressor price. Plan accordingly.
Yes. Suppressors increase back pressure, which increases bolt speed and can cause overgassing. Many builders add an adjustable gas block (see our Gas Block Guide) to tune their rifle for suppressed shooting. 14% of muzzle device selections are suppressor mounts, showing this is a common consideration.
