AR-15 Lower Receiver Trends: 15,000+ Builds Analyzed
Quick Answer: What Lower Receiver Do Builders Choose?
The data is clear: Aero Precision dominates the AR-15 lower receiver market. Their M4E1 platform — in both stripped and complete configurations — appears in over 32.9% of all lower selections. Palmetto State Armory holds a strong second at 22.4%, offering the best budget entry point.
- Best Overall: Aero Precision M4E1 Stripped Lower — 10.6% of all builds
- Best Budget: PSA AR15 Complete Classic Stealth Lower — 13.2% of builds
- Best Ambi: Radian A-DAC 15 — 2.8% of builds
- Best Premium: LMT MARS-L — 1.9% of builds
The lower receiver is the serialized component of your AR-15 — it's the legal firearm. Every other part ships directly to your door, but the lower requires an FFL transfer. Choose wisely because it's the foundation of your build.

How This Data Was Sourced
The lower receiver data in this guide comes from real GunPartPicker builds — not surveys, not affiliate click data, not manufacturer claims.
We analyzed over 15,000+ new anonymous AR-15 builds created in February — 8,600+ builds included a lower receiver selection across 660+ unique models and 30+ brands.
To ensure data quality, we weighted builds containing 6 or more components — indicating genuine purchase intent rather than casual browsing.
GunPartPicker does not track, identify, or store any personal information about builders. All build data is aggregated and anonymized. We never know who built what — only what components were selected together. Your build is your business.
What counts as a "real build":
- Minimum 6 components selected (barrel, upper, lower, handguard, BCG, trigger, etc.)
- Active builder session with multiple slot selections
- No duplicate or spam builds — each session counted once

The Lower Receiver Landscape
Aero Precision — The Default Choice (32.9%)
Aero Precision owns nearly a third of the lower receiver market. The M4E1 platform is their flagship, appearing in multiple variants:
- M4E1 Stripped (Freedom Edition): 10.6% — the single most popular stripped lower
- M4E1 Complete w/ MOE SL: 8.8% — most popular complete option
- M4E1 Stripped FDE: 4.5% — for builders who want cerakote from the factory
The M4E1's appeal is the threaded roll pin design. Instead of driving a roll pin through the bolt catch (the most dreaded step in a lower build), you simply thread a screw. The integrated trigger guard eliminates another pin. These aren't gimmicks — they're genuine quality-of-life improvements that cost nothing extra.
Aero Precision lowers combine for over 24% of all selections when you add up every M4E1 variant. No other single product line comes close.
Palmetto State Armory — The Budget King (22.4%)
PSA takes second place with 22.4% of lower selections. Their Complete Classic Stealth Lower at 13.2% is actually the single most-added lower receiver in our entire dataset — more than any individual Aero SKU.
PSA's strategy is simple: complete lowers with everything included at aggressive prices. For builders who want to minimize assembly, PSA delivers a ready-to-go package.
Premium Tier — Radian, LMT, Noveske
The premium segment is small but dedicated:
- Radian A-DAC 15: 2.8% — fully ambidextrous from the factory with their proprietary ADAC system
- LMT MARS-L: 1.9% — the duty-grade ambi standard, used by military units
- Noveske N4 Gen 4: 1.8% — premium fit and finish with ambi controls
Combined, these three premium brands make up about 6.5% of lower selections. Builders who choose them are typically building duty-grade or clone-correct rifles.

Stripped vs Complete: What Builders Prefer
Stripped vs Complete Lowers
How builders prefer to buy their lower receivers
| Item | Share (%) |
|---|---|
| Stripped | 62% |
| Complete | 38% |
62% of builders choose stripped lowers. This makes sense for the GunPartPicker audience — these are builders who want to hand-pick every component.
A stripped lower is just the serialized receiver — no parts installed. You'll pick your own trigger, grip, stock, and lower parts kit. A complete lower comes ready to mate with an upper — everything is installed and function-tested.
Which should you choose? If you're on GunPartPicker, you're probably a builder. Go stripped — you'll pick a better trigger, grip, and stock than any manufacturer includes. Complete lowers make sense if you want to minimize assembly and just need a functional platform.
The lower receiver is the only AR-15 component that requires an FFL transfer. Plan accordingly when ordering — you'll need to ship to a licensed dealer and complete a background check.
Buyer's Guide: Stripped Lowers by Budget
Stripped Lower Receivers by Price Tier
| Tier | Product | Price ($) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (<$100) | PSA Blem | 50 |
| Budget (<$100) | PSA Stealth | 60 |
| Budget (<$100) | PSA M4 Carbine | 70 |
| Budget (<$100) | Spike's Punisher | 89 |

| Premium ($400+) | Radian A-DAC 15 | 515 |
| Premium ($400+) | KAC SR-15 Blem | 880 |
Stripped lowers range from $50 mil-spec forgings to $500+ ambidextrous billet receivers. Here's what your money gets you at every level.
Budget Stripped (Under $100)
Mil-spec forged 7075-T6 aluminum — the same basic receiver geometry used since the 1960s. At this price, you're getting a proven platform with no frills. These will accept every standard lower parts kit and trigger on the market.

PSA stripped lowers are the entry point for most first-time builders. At $50-$70, there's zero risk in starting here. If you catch a Blem sale, even better — cosmetic blemishes don't affect function.
Mid-Tier Stripped ($100–$300)
Better machining, enhanced features like threaded roll pins and integrated trigger guards, and brand names that hold resale value. The Aero M4E1 lives here and dominates for good reason.

The Aero Precision M4E1 at ~$112 is the sweet spot of the stripped lower market. Threaded bolt catch pin, integrated trigger guard, and enhanced machining for barely more than a budget forging. There's a reason it dominates our build data.
Premium Stripped ($400+)
Fully ambidextrous controls, proprietary bolt catch mechanisms, billet construction. These are the lowers that define duty-grade and competition builds — and the ones that hold their resale value.

Premium ambi lowers like the Radian A-DAC and ADM UIC have proprietary bolt catch mechanisms. Standard mil-spec bolt catches won't work — use the manufacturer's supplied parts or compatible alternatives.

Complete lowers ship ready to pin onto an upper — trigger, grip, stock, buffer system, and all small parts installed. They're ideal if you want to minimize assembly or pair with a barreled upper for a fast two-pin build.
Budget Complete (Under $250)
PSA owns this segment. Their complete lowers include a mil-spec trigger, MOE furniture, and everything you need to get shooting. The tradeoff: you're stuck with the factory trigger and furniture unless you swap later.

PSA complete lowers under $200 are the fastest path to a functional AR-15. Pair with a PSA or BCM barreled upper and you have a two-pin rifle in under 30 seconds.
Mid-Tier Complete ($250–$500)
Better triggers, upgraded furniture, and brand recognition. Aero Precision and Spike's Tactical deliver complete lowers with noticeably better fit and finish than budget options.

The S&W M&P15 Complete at $350 is a sleeper pick — it comes with a surprisingly good trigger and properly staked castle nut. BCM complete lowers at ~$430 include their PNT trigger, which rivals standalone $60 triggers.
Premium Complete ($500+)
Duty-grade complete lowers from BCM, LMT, and Radian. These come with upgraded triggers, SOPMOD stocks, and ambidextrous controls — ready for hard use out of the box.

At the premium complete tier, you're paying for the whole package — trigger, furniture, and ambi controls. Make sure the included components match what you actually want. Swapping the trigger in a $900 LMT complete lower defeats the purpose of buying complete.
