Quick Answer: What Stock Do Builders Choose?

  • Most Popular Brand: Magpul — 24.5% of selections

  • Best All-Around: Magpul CTR — 7.3% combined (black + FDE)

How This Data Was Sourced

The stock data in this guide comes from real GunPartPicker builds — not surveys, not affiliate click data, not manufacturer claims.

We analyzed over 15,000+ new anonymous AR-15 builds created in February. Of those, 2,500+ builds included a stock selection across 230+ unique models and 20+ brands.

To ensure data quality, we weighted builds containing 6 or more components — indicating genuine purchase intent rather than casual browsing.

GunPartPicker does not track, identify, or store any personal information about builders. All build data is aggregated and anonymized. Your build is your business.

72% collapsible. The adjustable stock is the overwhelming choice because it lets you dial in length of pull for different shooting positions, armor, and body types.

10% fixed stocks are chosen primarily for precision/SPR builds where a solid cheek weld matters more than adjustability.

8% PDW/minimalist stocks come from builders optimizing for compact builds — often paired with shorter barrels.

7% pistol braces from SB Tactical reflect the pistol build segment, though regulatory changes have reduced this number.

The Stock Brands

Magpul — The Standard Bearer (24.5%)

Magpul built the modern AR stock market. Three product lines dominate:

  • CTR (black + FDE): 7.3% combined — the gold standard collapsible stock with friction lock
  • MOE SL-M: 3.6% — slim, lightweight, streamlined profile
  • Plus various MOE, STR, and UBR variants

Daniel Defense (14.6%)

Daniel Defense Collapsible Buttstock at 11.2% is the surprise category leader. DD stocks feature a soft rubber butt pad, QD sling mounts, and a slim profile. Builders who want premium feel choose DD.

Hogue (11.8%)

Hogue's OverMolded stocks provide the most comfortable shooting experience in the category. Their rubber overmold absorbs recoil and provides a non-slip surface. At 11.8%, Hogue proves comfort sells.

Strike Industries, B5, VLTOR (5-6% each)

Strike Industries (5.9%), B5 Systems (4.9%), and VLTOR (3.8%) serve the enthusiast segment with innovative designs. VLTOR's IMOD at 3.2% is the duty-grade pick. B5's SOPMOD and Bravo stocks are popular for clone and recce builds.

How to Choose Your Stock

  1. Budget ($20-$35): Magpul MOE or MOE SL. Simple, proven, cheap.
  2. Mid-range ($40-$60): Magpul CTR or Daniel Defense Collapsible. The mainstream choices.
  3. Comfort ($40-$60): Hogue OverMolded. Best rubber butt pad in the game.
  4. Premium ($60-$100): VLTOR IMOD, B5 SOPMOD, or Magpul UBR. Enhanced cheek weld and build quality.

Always verify your buffer tube is mil-spec (1.148" diameter) before ordering a stock. Commercial-spec tubes (1.170") require commercial-spec stocks, which are increasingly rare.

Budget Tier: Under $40

The under-$40 range covers mil-spec GI stocks, basic collapsible options, and entry-level Magpul. You get functional adjustability and mil-spec compatibility without premium features like friction locks, enhanced cheek welds, or rubber butt pads. For a first build or a beater rifle, these get the job done.

The Magpul MOE and MOE SL-M are the best values in this tier. They're the same polymer and design DNA as Magpul's premium stocks — just without the friction lock and enhanced cheek weld of the CTR.

Mid Tier: $40–$100

This is where most builders land. The $40–$100 range includes friction-lock stocks (Magpul CTR), premium rubber overmolds (Hogue), and brand-name options from Daniel Defense and Strike Industries. You get meaningful upgrades in lock-up, comfort, and QD sling mounting over budget options.

The Daniel Defense Collapsible at $80 is the single most popular stock on GunPartPicker — chosen in 11.2% of all builds. Its soft rubber butt pad and slim profile make it a favorite for builders who want premium feel without going full SOPMOD.

Premium Tier: $100+

Premium stocks deliver enhanced cheek welds, adjustable cheek risers, storage compartments, or precision chassis integration. VLTOR's IMOD is the duty-grade standard. The FAB Defense GL-Core M CP adds a compartment for batteries or ear plugs. B5's SOPMOD Enhanced is the clone-correct choice. And MDT's Skeleton brings precision rifle ergonomics to the AR platform.

Premium stocks over $100 are worth it only if you've already invested in a quality barrel, trigger, and optic. A $300 stock on a $400 rifle is backwards — put that money into components that affect accuracy first.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Daniel Defense Collapsible Buttstock leads at 11.2% of builds. Magpul dominates as a brand at 24.5% when combining CTR, MOE SL-M, and other variants.
Mil-spec. Over 90% of aftermarket stocks are designed for mil-spec diameter buffer tubes. Commercial-spec is effectively obsolete in the custom build market.
The CTR has a friction lock for tighter lockup. The MOE is simpler and cheaper. Both work great. The CTR at 7.3% combined (black + FDE) edges out the MOE variants.
Only 7% of builds in our data include a pistol brace (primarily SB Tactical). Regulatory uncertainty has shifted many builders toward SBR tax stamps with standard stocks.
72% of builders choose collapsible/adjustable stocks. Unless you're building a precision rifle (where a fixed stock with cheek riser makes sense), adjustable is the way to go for versatility.
